How can I donate books to the library?

Answer

Very generally, we accept quality books that enhance our collection and are relevant to student coursework and faculty research. Many people are incredibly fond of their books and are very reluctant to part with them without knowing they have a ‘good home’. We are librarians, and we understand that, however, not every book is a good fit for Manhattanville.

First Jeff Rosedale, the Library Director, talks to every donor. Only after that will we begin to make arrangements for delivery and receiving the collection. Once it's here we try to assess each book that may be appropriate for the collection. We look at condition, if we already have the item, if it’s in the public domain as well as the holdings of other local libraries.

These books are placed on carts or our shelves as we work through the donation. Each books needs a catalog record from OCLC and to be ‘dressed’ with labels, stamps and a call number. Then the book can be shelved. Many of our donations have special book plates to reflect the donor and (most recently) donor information within the catalog record. If you don't think that's the option for you, try Better World Books, they have drop boxes throughout the area.
