How do I cite a museum label or wall text?

Answer

From the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition, 14.133:

"To cite the text that accompanies a work of art at a museum (as on a wall), simply credit the museum in the text or in a note (e.g., "In the text accompanying Picasso's sculpture at the Musee Picasso...").

From the MLA Style Center: https://style.mla.org/citing-wall-text/

"Provide a description of the wall text as the title of the source. This may include the title of the artwork the wall text explains and the artist who created it. If the work was part of an exhibit, include the exhibit’s name as the title of the container, followed by the date (opening and closing), and the museum and city as the location."

Example:

Wall text for The Balcony, by Edouard Manet. Manet/Degas, 24 Sept. 2023 - 7 Jan. 2024, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

For in-text, introduce the source in the body of the paper as in the Chicago example above.
